Berkeley Lab's Information Technology Division is looking for an internal communications intern (grad or undergrad student position) to assist with its outreach to the Laboratory?s scientific community. The IT Division supports the research mission of Berkeley Lab by providing cutting edge technology services for both operational and scientific needs. You'll work within the Office of the Chief Information Officer to help us refine and extend our internal communications efforts. You should be a motivated self-starter with an interest in technology and in how scientists do their work. Writing/Editing skills are important, but so is a good sense of what things are interesting and how to present them. You?ll be writing short news releases, helping to define content strategy, writing/editing blog posts, and helping with social media strategy. Basic website maintenance for content will be required, along with occasional participation in outreach efforts within the Laboratory including attending presentations, working on tablings, etc. You will have the opportunity to: * Help communicate IT service offerings to scientists and support staff. * Develop internal marketing and communications that anticipate and respond to the needs of our community. * Communicate with IT staff at all levels to learn about new developments and turn this information into effective communication to the Laboratory. A sample of specific tasks include: * Develop short articles and web content which explain new and existing services. * Help develop screencasts and videos to showcase services. * Develop and refine web content in response to strategic goals and user-feedback. * Help plan strategic communications initiatives. Qualifications: * Graduate student status preferred. Undergraduates (sophomore to senior status) will be considered. * Full time registered student, and can work within general business hours. * Excellent short-form writing and editing skills. * Can handle ad hoc work/projects and changing priorities * Detailed-oriented, well-organized, and reliable. * Good with technology - should not be scared to dive into consumer-level tools and learn how they work. Knowledge of any of the following would be a plus, but is not required (the ability to demonstrate interest and develop skills in all is required): * Science and Scientists * Google Apps (especially Google Docs, Google Sites, etc). * Video and Screencast Production Notes This is a part-time position with an appointment available through May 2011, possibly longer. Hours: Flexible, 8 -20 hours/ week during the school year, possibly up to 30 hours during the summer Pay: Based on UCB student pay scale, depending on academic year status Students with UCB GSRA appointments are welcome to apply.
