Orlando VAMC has an opportunity for one paid internship for a qualified RHIA or RHIT applicant who is either already credentialed or is registration eligible. The internship is a paid two year program that prepares you for HIM positions in VHA. This training is accomplished through a full-time paid position under a Preceptor, an experienced health information management professional. HIM interns who successfully complete the training will be eligible to apply for full-time positions in the field or may be placed non-competitively in a position. The intern position is located in the Health Information Management Section (HIMS) and will provide advisory services and technical expertise on medical record and health information issues to both employees of the department as well as staff throughout the medical center. The intern will work closely with Medical Administration Service personnel, our electronic medical record implementation team, and the HIMS Manager who will serve as Preceptor. Your Commitment: Your commitment to us is to make this learning a full-time occupation for the two-year period, to give your best effort, to seek information and ask questions to help you learn quickly and effectively and to sincerely seek a career in VHA. DUTIES: Back to top PURPOSE: The Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP) is designated to further develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities of future Health Information Management (HIM) professional leaders and managers to manage the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) health information program in accordance with policies, laws, science, technology, and federal government rules and regulations. The training is accomplished through a full-time paid position under a Preceptor, an experienced Health Information Management professional. Our goal is that upon completion of the two-year training program, the intern continues his/her career as a valuable member of the VHA workforce. The HIMS intern who successfully completes the training will be eligible to apply for full-time positions in the field or he/she may be non-competitively converted in a position. DUTIES: The position of Health Information Management (HIM) Intern is located in the Health Information Management Section (HIMS) of the Health Administration Service (HAS) at the Orlando VA Medical Center. The intern serves in a developmental capacity as technical specialist, provides advisory and technical expertise on medical record and health information issues, and provides advice and guidance on health information management program(s) in relation to such issues as documentation requirements for coding/billing, liability issues, advance directives, informed consent, scanning processes, patient privacy/confidentiality, record control processes, and state reporting, etc. The intern will serve under a Preceptor, and will work closely with the Health Administration Service staff. Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.
