There is one temporary position available in ODOT's Salem office for a Temporary Geologist. The position is anticipated to begin March 1st with the candidate working 40 hours per week. You must have completed a Bachelors degree in Geology from an accredited degree program to qualify. We are also considering Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering with a Geotechnical emphasis. Duties & Responsibilities: Assist primarily with Unstable Slopes Program (landslide/rockfall) data collection: · Research as-built engineering drawings, inspection reports, project files · Collect field data using measuring devices and survey equipment · Download field data into office computer · Conduct Quality Control on field data to assure correctness & completeness · Enter data, run queries and generate computer reports Qualifications & Desired Attributes: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • a Bachelor's degree in Geology • possess a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. Your driving record is considered unacceptable for any of the following traffic offenses in the last 36 months. Offenses include but are not limited to: o Misdemeanor or felony traffic offense in the last 36 months. Includes reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and others; or o Felony revocation of driving privileges or felony or misdemeanor driver license suspension with the last 36 months; or o More than 3 Class B traffic violations in the last 12 months; or o Class A moving violation in the last 12 months. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the following profile: * Completed at least the Bachelors Degree by March 2011; * Direct work experience in Geology; * Knowledge/education in geology with emphasis on slope; geomorphology, engineering geology; * Ability to recognize mass-wasting features; * Ability to read engineering plans, construction documents and inspection reports Working knowledge of measuring devices (rules, tapes, protractors); * Land surveying knowledge/education and use of surveying instruments, i.e.: clinometers & GPS receivers; * Ability to organize and present field notes/findings in a clear, concise manner and produce sketches of site conditions. Additional Information: Working Conditions · Work out of the Salem office and a field environment throughout the state of Oregon. · Physically demanding (extreme weather conditions; rugged terrain; steep embankments; work around bodies of water and traffic; use machete, hand tools, digital camera, etc.) · Extensive/extended travel weekly/overnight/throughout Oregon, must have valid driver's license. · Regular/punctual attendance is required.
