Engineering Intern - Summer/Fall 2012 Tracking Code 2012010 Job Description Primary Duty Provide support in the areas of Maintenance Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Project Engineering, Field Technologies, Distribution Construction Services, System Planning, and Damage Prevention by assisting and advising the Engineering and Field Services staff with regards to Engineering and Field Services projects, as well as maintaining records and files and assuming responsibility for completion of daily tasks. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Perform miscellaneous tasks including, but not limited to, creating Access databases, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, AutoCAD drawings, GIS drawings, and completing assigned budget projects Gather and prepare materials to be given to the Construction and Maintenance Department for leak surveys of mains, including periodically reviewing completed records to assure completion of the surveys within the allotted time Update and maintain data in GIS based replacement main priority models Oversee the work completed during new business construction, relocation projects, and leak repair, including making sure the work was completed according to Company standards and the proper notification was documented for department records Support the development and implementation of process changes to enhance the Company’s efficiency in conducting programs, managing projects, and complying with pipeline safety and environmental regulations Research and evaluate new technology to enhance all aspects of the Company’s operations Perform system studies of the Company’s various pressure networks Prepare documentation and procedures as needed to ensure regulatory compliance Gain and apply knowledge of all applicable DOT/PHMSA/MPSC regulations and, to a lesser degree, all EPA, Corps of Engineers, and OSHA regulations as they impact Operations projects Secure permits and complete required regulatory submittals as needed for Laclede Gas Company to conduct its operations Provide project management support to include research, design, scheduling, and construction oversight, including preparing contracts and bid proposals Assist with audits of the Company’s practices, procedures, and facilities to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and Company Standards Prepare departmental reports and administrative paperwork including filing, copying, and other clerical work Maintain central file system for all Engineering and Field Services activities as required by regulations Regular attendance is considered an essential job function Additional Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Research, analyze, and develop responses to customer and public inquiries, requests, and complaints Learn and develop knowledge in the area of control valves and pressure limiting equipment Review technical periodicals for information applicable to Company operations Assist in bid review and selection of contractors and equipment Prepare monthly status reports and update project schedules Prepare and/or use documents, spreadsheets, databases, drawings, and other software applications in the daily course of the job Handle calls and correspondence from Construction and Maintenance foremen, general foremen, civic inspectors, SAID, the Marketing Department, and other Laclede departments regarding the status of jobs and projects Handle calls and correspondence from outside the company (municipalities, engineering firms, developers) to process the needed information to coordinate Laclede’s facilities with proposed relocations, reinforcements, improvements, and development Investigate reported problems regarding Company facilities and coordinate repairs with the appropriate department Review the status of assigned projects for periodic meetings, coordinating required actions with appropriate Operations personnel Assist Company employees with various computer problems Supervisory Responsibilities None Required Skills Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to demonstrate and master the core and job category competencies applicable for this role within the organization Ability to lead by example in support of the Company’s essential characteristics and values: Strong Ethics and Integrity, Dedication to a Safe Work Environment, Commitment to a Diverse Workforce that recognizes and respects every individual’s unique skills and perspectives Knowledge of basic engineering principles Knowledge of Microsoft Access 97, Excel, PowerPoint and Word Knowledge of basic computer skills Ability to apply basic engineering principles Ability to read, write, and interpret technical specifications, contracts, and technical drawings, including construction plans and distribution maps Ability to read, understand, and apply knowledge of pipeline safety regulations Ability to read, understand, and apply knowledge of construction standards and practices Ability to understand, and apply knowledge of the Service Location System and Leak Control System Ability to use or learn to use various software, including, but not limited to: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, and GIS Ability to work with and communicate effectively with a variety of Company personnel Ability to coordinate the work of several Laclede departments to facilitate construction, retirement, or relocation of gas mains and services Ability to gain and apply knowledge of the requirements of Laclede’s Bare Steel and Cast Iron Replacement Programs and inspection programs Ability to learn to maintain data and create maps in a GIS mapping system Ability to follow directions Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, including producing well written reports with good sentence structure and minimal, if any, punctuation, spelling, and grammar errors Ability to work on several projects at once Ability to work independently Certificates, Licenses, Registrations None Required Experience Education and/or Experience Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering or science Previous experience working with computers Job Location St. Louis, MO, US.
